The International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, established in 1954, is a milestone in the tennis and sporting world. This landmark in Newport, Rhode Island consists of 18 galleries with a chronicled history of tennis dating back to the 12th Century. Over 16,000 permanent objects fill the Museum along with an abundant array of books, photos, films and tapes, magazines, periodicals, and personal player memorabilia. Any sports fan would be impressed with this vast tennis collection located in the home of the historic Newport Casino.
1881 marked the year of the first U.S. National Tennis Championships, hosted on the grass courts of the future International Tennis Hall of Fame. Now recognized as the US Open, this tournament moved to its current home in New York but Newport’s tennis tradition continues every summer through the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
Noted for being the only professional tennis tournament played on grass in the United States, the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships is a prestigious event and the first event of the US swing of the summer tennis season.
At first, American players were the only inductees into the Hall of Fame but in 1975 any tennis player from around the world was given the opportunity to be honored as tennis’ finest.
This weekend the Class of 2010 Induction, will feature individuals who were doubles stars and innovators of the game. Mark Woodforde, Gigi Fernandez, Natasha Zvereva, and Owen Davidson will be given the one of the greatest honors in tennis.
Fila is proud to be a sponsor of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships!
