Marin is one the players on the “bubble” and played in his fourth ATP Tour final this season. He is currently ranked at number 13 on the ATP rankings.  Just three weeks after advancing to the final of the China Open, Cilic played in the final yesterday in Vienna, but ultimately lost to hometown favorite Juergen Meltzer 6-4, 6-3.

As reported by the ATP World Tour:

“The final was a great experience for me, another one in three or four weeks,” commented Cilic. ”He played really good this week and especially today in the final. He was able to sustain his tennis on a good level and when he got his chances he took all of them so it wasn’t easy for me to get the advantage.  The season was really good and I’m happy about it. These past two months I played really good and I’m looking forward for these next two tournaments in Basel and Paris, which I hope I’m going to play as well as here. I’m really happy that I made it this far [in the Battle for London],” said Cilic. ”I have a slight chance to make it, you never know what’s going to happen in the last two or three weeks of the season. There are always some surprises and definitely I’m in good form and hopefully I can win some matches and from there we’ll see what happens.”

Congratulations to Marin Cilic and Janko Tipsarevic! They both advanced to the semifinals of the ATP event in Vienna! Marin looks to capture his third title of the season and Janko his first.

VIENNA (Reuters) - Top seed Marin Cilic stayed on course for a third ATP title this year with a comfortable victory over Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in their Vienna Open quarter-final on Friday.

The Croat, a wild card replacement for injured U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, hit eight aces on his way to a 6-1 6-4 win over the sixth seed and 2004 champion to set up a semi-final with Germany’s Phillip Kohlschreiber.

Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic, runner-up in Moscow last week, sprang another surprise when he beat third-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-4 6-7 6-3.

Marin Cilic defeated Daniel Brands 7-6 (7), 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the BA Tennis Trophy in Vienna.  Cilic is looking for his thrid title of the season and a place in the draw of the ATP World Tour season-ending Final in London in December.

Marin has had a break-out year with strong results in the Grand Slams and two ATP World Tour Singles titles.  He faces Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who beat Daniel Koellerer 63 63,  in the quarterfinals.

Janko Tipsarevic is on the verge of something he has never done before in his career: reach an ATP final.

Tipsrevic will have a chance–and a great one, at that–to do it on Saturday afternoon at the Kremlin Cup as he faces a first-ever meeting with unheralded qualifier Ilya Marchenko. The winner of this surprising semifinal showdown will take on either Mikhail Youzhny or Mikhail Kukushkin for the Moscow title.

Marchenko, however, cannot be counted out even though he is a massive underdog. The 22-year-old Ukrainian is in the midst of an absolute dream week. He had to qualify just to get into the main draw, and since then he has gotten the best of Denis Istomin, Andrey Golubev, and Evgeny Korolev, all in three sets. While he has not yet faced a seeded player, Marchenko was not even closed to being favored in any of those matchups. The world No. 190 has already won more ATP main-draw matches this week (three) than he had in his entire career (two) prior to arriving in Moscow.

A win over an in-form Tipsarevic would be the biggest stunner of all. The sixth-seeded Serb appeared in three ATP quarterfinals before this week, but is finally through to his first semifinal of 2009 after dispatching Daniel Koellerer, Christophe Rochus, and Robby Ginepri all in straight sets. Tipsarevic, who owns a solid 25-22 match record at the ATP level this season, also won a Challenger title earlier this month. He registers at a solid 46th in the world–13 spots off his career-high–and is poised for a return trip to the Top 40 when the next rankings come out.
