Agi & Marin win in front of home crowds!

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Busy weekend for Fila’s ATP & WTA Tour tennis stars! While the men spent the weekend in Davis Cup play, the women continued with regular tour stops.

Agi Szavay (4th seed) defeated Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder (top seed) at the WTA Tour event in Hungary 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Congrats Agi for winning in front of her home crowd!

Marin Cilic defeated James Blake ( 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2) to help Croatia advance to the Davis Cup Semi-finals.  Playing at the Sportska Dvorana in Croatia, Cilic helped the Croatian team defeat the USA 3-1 and advance to the Semifinals of Davis Cup.

Marin was overjoyed with the win. The ITF website reports

Cilic will lead Croatia in September, buoyed by an exhilarating experience over the nine sets he played. “This was one of the greatest ties I’ve played so far,” he said. “I think I’ve gained a lot of experience here, everyone supported me, and it really felt good to play at home. The Czechs are also a great team, but playing at home is a little bit of an advantage, so with our team we can go through to the final.”

Fila’s Center Court collection made a Grand Slam debut!

In a nod to the fashion forward atmosphere of the French Open, Fila debuted its latest performance tennis collection - Center Court on the courts at Roland Garros. The Center Court Collection features bold, strong graphics with a flashy color combinations. Using technologically advanced materials, Fila blends avant-garde cut lines with asymmetrical graphics. The Collection was inspired by the grace of movement on court and the asymmetrical lines of the offer a synergy with the body in motion.  The men’s Center Court pieces integrate cutting edge performance elements such as, body mapping ventilation, seamless construction and 100% performance fabrics into classic polos, crews, sleeveless top and shorts. Fila’s ATP World Tour athletes, Marin Cilic, Janko Tipsarevic, and Dmitry Tursunov love the innovative body mapping fabrication because it offers unsurpassed performance attributes to insure optimal comfort, ventilation and moisture wicking. Janko Tipsarevic usually wears crew neck shirts, but this weekend, he decided to show some “muscle” in the sleeveless crew. The collection features a color range that complements the red clay of the French Open with the aptly named Parisian blue, white and navy.

The women’s Center Court styles were also inspired by movement, but with glamour and style. The Asymmetrical lines give the appearance of ribbons moving down the body while the color selection of black, white, rose and gold metallic adds a bold, yet flashy nod to contemporary lines.  The performance qualities of the Flat Poly Spandex Jersey combined with Stretch Mesh add beautiful draping qualities to the collection to compliment a feminine performance tennis look. The Center Court dress, worn by WTA star Agi Szavay, features a figure-flattering a-line shape to the skirt while a subtle gold metallic adds a bit of glamour to the tank styling. The collection is rounded out with a range of versatile pieces such as a pull on skort with side gold metallic detailing, sleeveless polo with a self fabric collar and 5 button placket, cami tank, scoop tank and v-neck cap sleeve top. WTA star Anna Chakvetaze favors the pink skort and cami tank, both featuring subtle gold metallic accents.

Agi Szavay’s Stunning Win in Paris!

Friday, May 29th, 2009

The Clay courts in Roland Garros were familiar territory to Agi Szavay four years ago when, as a junior, she won the Singles and Doubles titles. Today at the French Open, Szavay stunned the crowds with a decisive win over third seeded Venus Williams 6-0, 6-4.  This is a Grand Slam of “firsts” for Agi…first time she advanced to Third Round and now, the first time she will appear in the Fourth Round where she will play Cibulkova.  Good luck Agi!

On the men’s side, Marin Cilic advanced against Stepanek 6-1, 7-6, 6-3.

Results and Dmitry’s take on Roland Garros!

Dmitry Tursunov

Dmitry Tursunov

Marin Cilic and Janko Tipsarevic continued their winning ways through the Second Round by defeating Sela (Israel) and Lopez (Spain), respectively.

Agi Szavay was in good form against Vesnina of Russia and won in straight sets  6-2 6-0.

Wednesday proved to be a tough day for Dmitry Tursunov. His First Round match against Clement was suspended last night due to darkness. The Russian could not outlast the Frenchman on clay and lost 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-1.

Dmitry took some time to answer a few of our questions about Roland Garros.

Fila: Do you like playing at Roland Garros? Why?
DT:
French Open is an embodiment of everything evil in tennis. Mainly because the surface is clay. Other than that it’s a fantastic tournament with a great atmosphere. It’s located in the heart of Paris and you feel like the tournament is a part of a big festivity which makes it a bit more exciting to participate in. You are almost transformed into a stage actor of a big spectacle.

Fila: How many years have you played there?
DT: Few years already. Not sure how many years but long enough to see myself, twice, get to round of 32 on this surface which is akin to seeing a moon eclipse twice in one night.

Fila:  What is your best result at the French Open?
DT: Round of 32

Fila: How is Roland Garros different from the other Grand Slams?
DT: It is played in France. The others are played elsewhere. But seriously, the atmosphere is somewhat close to US Open in a sense that a lot of famous people attend it, more for the sake of being photographed here than to actually watch Rafa pick his undies. It’s a place to be seen and the whole event has a charm - slightly metro-sexual but very chic.

Fila: What do you do in your free time during the tournament?
DT: Not too much, unfortunately. I usually run around like crazy trying to get a visa to Great Britain. We’ll go out to eat dinner in the evenings but I am yet to go sightseeing. I have been on top of Eiffel Tower long time ago but that’s about it.

Fila:  What is your favorite restaurant in Paris?
DT:  That’s a trick question. The correct question is that all food is wonderful in Paris, otherwise Parisians will not give you a visa for next year. There are a number of wonderful restaurants so I can’t pick one. The trick is, you can not judge the quality of food by the appearance of the restaurant. It could be quite the opposite!

First Round Frenzy at Roland Garros

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

The spotlight is on tennis as the French Open takes center stage! The past few days were a buzz with first round activity at Roland Garros as the clay court specialists demonstrated the finesse necessary to be victorious in Paris.

In the Men’s Singles, Marin Cilic  of Croatia,  seeded thirteenth, defeated Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic 6-0 6-4 6-3.  Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, fresh off a win with his countrymen at the Tennis World Team Cup, defeated A Montanes of Spain 3-6 7-6 7-6 6-4.  Andreas Seppi of Italy let defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez  of Spain 6-3 6-3 6-1.

The match between Dmitry Tursunov of Russia, seeded twenty-first , and Arnaud Clement (France) 3-6 6-3 was suspended due to darkness and will continue tomorrow!

Agi Szavay of Hungary, seeded twenty-ninth, defeated Corinna Dentoni of Italy 6-3 6-4.

Over the course of the French Open, check out fila.com for interviews with our sponsored tennis players! Over the weekend, Agi Szavay took time out of her practice schedule to answer a few questions…

Fila: Do you like playing at Roland Garros? Why?

AS: I like playing at Roland Garros a lot because clay is my favorite surface. I grew up playing on clay so I always look forward to play in Paris. The spectators are amazing and and the city is beautiful.

Fila: How many years have you played in the French Open?

AS: So many! :) I used to play the junior tournament.  I have one of my best memories from Roland Garros because I won the junior singles and doubles title as well in 2005. This is my 4th year here as a pro.

Fila: What is your best result at the French Open?

AS: I made the last 32 in last year.

Fila:  How is Roland Garros different from the other Grand Slams?

AS:  That is a hard question. All the Grand Slams are different…. Different people, location, surface… Roland Garros is very traditional just like Wimbledon.

Fila: What do you do in your free time during the tournament?

AS: I like sightseeing. We rented bikes last year and went around the city by bike. It was a lots of fun!

Fila: What is your favorite restaurant in Paris?

AS: I dont have a favorite place.  I like to try out new places all the time so I think I will discover new taste this year too!

Thanks Agi! Best of luck in your second round match!

Fila debuts Heritage Collection in Miami!

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Fila debuted the return of its Heritage line of performance tennis apparel to its Spring ‘09 Collection at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Fila’s design team dipped into the archives for inspiration to create this all new line that combines signature Italian styling with state of the art performance fabrications for both men and women. Fila’s sponsored athletes Anna Chakvetadze, Agi Szavay, Janko Tipsarevic and Dmitry Tursunov will wear the Heritage Collection on the courts of this year’s Sony Ericsson Open.

The men’s heritage stripe polo with engineered yarn dye stripe design, features a self fabric collar, 4-button placket and side vents. The classic polo, that is straight from Fila’s design archives in Italy, features a snap contrast placket and contrast piping. The collection also includes 8 ½ ” inseam shorts, jacket and warm-up pants.

Women’s Heritage speaks clearly to an old school appeal combining a clean, classic Fila true navy, red and white color palette in a definitive integrated collection cut from Fila’s performance Flat Poly Spandex Jersey. The centerpiece of the collection, the Heritage dress includes a feminine mesh ruffle at the cap sleeve and bottom hem. The draw-cord at the bottom hem allows the wearer to “customize” the look by either cinching the skirt or keeping an a-line shape. Fully utilizing the excellent draping qualities of the fabrication, the line melds old with new with a feminine twist. The collection’s cami-tank is a favorite of Anna Chakvetadze. The ruching on the center front and contrast twist back straps add to the overall look. Balancing the line for all conditions are the jacket and pants in French Terry. Heritage jacket features ruching on the top of sleeve and gathering at the back seam, striped rib collar, cuff and bottom. The jacket is not just for the court and is a great transitional piece. The Heritage polo includes gathering at top sleeve and textured stripe insert snap placket & rounded collar. The collection is complimented by versatile cami and razorback tanks, cap sleeve tops and skort with front overlapping panel. Fila’s Heritage line is available through tennis specialty retailers nationwide and on fila.com.

Up close & personal - Agi Szavay

How did you prepare for the Sony Ericsson Open?

Actually, I’m on the road since 1rst of February and playing tournaments in a row. I started with the FED Cup and went on… I prepared with tournaments for the Sony Ericsson Open. I played really well in Indian Wells and I’m looking forward to play in Miami.

What is your daily routine during tournaments?
Well, it is pretty much the same and it depends on the match schedule. If I don’t play any matches I practice twice a day and work out for an hour. If I play I just warm up with hitting some balls and rest till my match starts. Usually, I go out to restaurant in the evening. I like trying out new restaurants and different foods.
What are your favorite places in Miami? Any favorite restaurants, attractions? What do you do in your “free time” in Miami?
I like shopping. Miami is one of the best place to do so. Lots of nice malls and shops around the city. I like the Coconut Grove area. It is really pretty. I would love to visit the Miami Seaquarium and swim with dolphins:)
Why do you like playing this tournament?
I like Key Biscayne and the Ocean. It is beautiful here and all the people are so nice. It’s always something going on here so you are never bored.
