Cilic Charges into Second Round in Chennai

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Marin Cilic certainly took advantage of his time off during the month of December. The young Croat raced through his first round match in Chennai, India today against Russia’s Igor Kuznitsyn.  The 14th ranked Cilic beat the Kuznitsyn in a decisive 6-2, 6-4 victory. Cilic won the Chennai Open last year and is enthusiastic about the first tournament of the 2010 ATP World Tour season.

As reported by the AFP, after the match Cilic said:

“It is good to start the year well after coming off a long break,  I think I played pretty good today. I served well and was consistent from the baseline. Igor had no break points in the match, which showed I was on top of him.  Look, it does not matter who else is there in the draw, everyone has to win five matches to win the tournament. I am thinking of only my game. I know I will do well if I continue to play well.”

Fila’s Janko Tipsarevic upset Carlos Moya in his first round match in Chennai today.

Good luck Janko & Marin!

Tipsarevic One Win from First Final!

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Janko Tipsarevic is having a great week in Moscow at the Kremlin Cup. He advanced against strong ATP Tour players to reach the Kremlin Cup semi-finals today.  A win today against qualifier Ilya Marchenko would advance Janko to his first ATP Final! Good luck Janko!

Janko Tipsarevic

Janko Tipsarevic

Here is a report from www.tennistalk.com about the match up:

Janko Tipsarevic is on the verge of something he has never done before in his career: reach an ATP final.

Tipsrevic will have a chance–and a great one, at that–to do it on Saturday afternoon at the Kremlin Cup as he faces a first-ever meeting with unheralded qualifier Ilya Marchenko. The winner of this surprising semifinal showdown will take on either Mikhail Youzhny or Mikhail Kukushkin for the Moscow title.

Marchenko, however, cannot be counted out even though he is a massive underdog. The 22-year-old Ukrainian is in the midst of an absolute dream week. He had to qualify just to get into the main draw, and since then he has gotten the best of Denis Istomin, Andrey Golubev, and Evgeny Korolev, all in three sets. While he has not yet faced a seeded player, Marchenko was not even closed to being favored in any of those matchups. The world No. 190 has already won more ATP main-draw matches this week (three) than he had in his entire career (two) prior to arriving in Moscow.

A win over an in-form Tipsarevic would be the biggest stunner of all. The sixth-seeded Serb appeared in three ATP quarterfinals before this week, but is finally through to his first semifinal of 2009 after dispatching Daniel Koellerer, Christophe Rochus, and Robby Ginepri all in straight sets. Tipsarevic, who owns a solid 25-22 match record at the ATP level this season, also won a Challenger title earlier this month. He registers at a solid 46th in the world–13 spots off his career-high–and is poised for a return trip to the Top 40 when the next rankings come out.

Eastbourne Final Rematch in Indianapolis

Friday, July 24th, 2009

When Dmitry Tursunov and Frank Dancevic met at the Eastbourne Final in July, it was Dmitry’s day to lift the winner trophy.   Just moments ago at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships, Frank Dancevic won his second meeting with Tursunov.  In 2007, Dancevic had a breakthrough performance in Indy and advanced to the Final where he met Tursunov, who ultimately won the event in 2007.

Dancevic, clad in Fila’s vintage Terra Rosa polo, won his match against Tursunov 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 and advanced to the tournament semi-final.  Good luck Frank!

In 1881, the Newport Casino hosted the first men’s United States National Lawn Tennis Association tournament.  In 1915 that tournament was moved to Forest Hills, N.Y., and in1978 moved to Flushing Meadows, N.Y. We now know this tournament as the US Open.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame Museum holds over 16,000 objects in its permanent collection. The Information Research Center (IRC) consists of over 3,000 books, 250,000 photographs, and 3,300 audio-visual materials.

The museum presents a timeline of tennis history discussing its origins and growth by era from the 1880s to the present.

The center hallway of the Museum illustrates the changes in fashion, culture and equipment with prints, photos, and racquets. Additional galleries stem from the center hallway and focus on more specific themes.

The Museum showcases a number of unique artifacts, including the patent from Queen Victoria in 1874 for the game of lawn tennis. This patent was awarded to Major Walter Clopton Wingfield (Hall of Fame Class of 1997). Displayed with this unique historical document is Major Wingfield’s British Cavalry Officer’s uniform and sword.

The Grand Staircase at the Museum’s entrance presents 39 trophies, all won by Hall of Famers.

Unforced errors seemed to be the only thing that kept Cilic from clinching a berth in to the next round7-5,7-5, 1-6,6-7,10-8. Marin Cilic, who was the youngest player left in Wimbledon on Saturday, proved he is “one to watch” on the ATP World Tour.

Tursunov Wins in Eastbourne!

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

ATP World Tour No. 27 Dmitry Tursunov gained a boost in confidence ahead of The Championships at Wimbledon after winning his first grass-court ATP World Tour title on Saturday with a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic in the final of the AEGON International, an ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in Eastbourne.

As reported on the AEGON International website, Tursunov was thrilled about his win. The always comical Dmitry had this to say about his win:

“It’s good to win, it doesn’t matter which surface it is on,” said Tursunov.

“It is human nature to want to beat someone else whether it’s Eastbourne, Wimbledon a Futures or Challenger event or beating your grandmother at chequers, it feels good to win.

“Playing on grass can be tough because we only get three or four weeks on it so players are a bit like cats in water, but it seems like a good surface to me. Obviously it’s given me some practice on grass which is very important in the lead-in to Wimbledon,”

Frank Dancevic qualified for the Eastbourne event and was playing for his first career ATP title.

“I went out with the mentality to just go for all my shots today,” explained Dancevic. “I did the same yesterday in the semi-finals against Santoro and it paid off. Today it didn’t. I think Dmitry played a great match. It’s ironic that I’ve lost to him in my only two ATP World Tour finals so far.

Get to know Marin Cilic

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Marin Cilic had an great run at this year’s French Open, advancing to the Fourth Round for the first time. As of Monday, June 1st, Cilic is ranked #13 on the ATP World Tour.  We had a chance to catch up with Marin during the tournament and he answered a few of our questions!

Marin Cilic

Marin Cilic

Fila:  Do you like playing at Roland Garros? Why?
MC:
Playing in Roland Garros was always special for me, as it is one of the biggest tournaments in tennis, it is also special to me because I had great pleasure of winning it when I played it as a junior.

Fila: How many years have you played there?
MC:
This is my 4th year playing as a professional, 2nd time directly in the main draw.

Fila: How is Roland Garros different from the other Grand Slams?
MC: From my point of view, Roland Garros requires from players more endurance and stronger physical preparation then the other grand slams. During the tournament we can see all kinds of weather changes so sometimes is not easy to adjust, it gets tough especially when its cold and windy.

Fila: What do you do in your free time during the tournament?
MC:
In my free time during the tournament, I am usually relaxing, going to cinema, having dinner in different restaurants, chatting online with friends… mostly doing things to keep my mind away from tennis. Nothing special, trying to get as much rest as I can.

Fila: What is your favorite restaurant in Paris?
MC: In the past years I stayed a little bit outside of center of the city, so I haven’t visited any of the restaurants in the heart of the city. Rather, I try to find quiet places which are closer to the hotel.

Blake & Seppi Continue Winning Ways!

Friday, May 8th, 2009

As reported on www.tennisweek.com, James Blake & Andreas Seppi continue their winning ways on clay in Europe! Blake & Seppi both advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Estoril Open and Munich Opens, respectively.

It took James Blake nearly a month to win his first clay-court match of the season. It took him only a day to win his second.

Blake advanced to his first clay-court quarterfinal in more than a year with today’s 7-6(6), 6-2 triumph over France’s Marc Gicquel at the Estoril Open. It is Blake’s first clay-court quarterfinal since he reached the last eight at the Italian Open last May, bowing to Stanislas Wawrinka.

“It’s a good feeling, I really like the way I’m playing,” said, who was the 2008 Houston runner-up on red clay. “I’m now playing my style and it feels great. Even if I’d not won two in a row, I would have been satisfied with my game. I was really going for my shots.”

The fourth-seeded Blake, who beat Frederico Gil on Wednesday, earned two service breaks in the 79-minute match to raise his record to 11-8 on the season.

Next up for Blake is another Frenchman: Florent Serra. The eighth-seeded Serra stopped Argentina’s Juan Monaco, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.  Blake has split two meetings with Serra, losing their only clay-court clash at the 2006 Italian Open.

“He beat me pretty bad on clay (Rome, 2006),” Blake said. “He’s a tough competitor and I certainly don’t expect him to roll over, but that won’t happen with me either. I’m confident in my game and I like my chances if I keep playing like this.”
