Fine tune your tennis skills at the Sony Ericsson Open

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Each day during the Sony Ericsson Open Scott McCulluch and the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Fila Touring Team lead Aussie-style tennis clinics on-site.

Clinics are seeing participants of all ages, from 5-year-olds to the seasoned player of all skill levels. After fans watch the stars on court, they test their skills with the Drysdale pros and hope the coaching helps their game. Will they qualify for 2010 Sony Ericsson Open? Dream? Reality? Only time will tell!

The Fila Touring team has exploded with dynamic energy. They help kids and adults fine tune their tennis games. Smiles, laughs and good times have been endless.

Many creative shots have been seen on the Fila court, some graceful, some not so… The Drysdale pros have seen the creation of some new shots on the courts, which we don’t quite think we will see on the pro courts! The Drysdale pros have seen the rebirth of the “frying pan” volley, the “scoop lob”, “shank winners”, and the “shovel forehand.”  It only takes a few minutes for the Drysdale team to iron out minor wrinkles as they mold future stars. All in the name of fun, smiles, laughs and new good Aussie “mates.”  The participants & spectators thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play alongside the stars of the Sony Ericsson Open.

After the Sony Ericsson Open, the Drysdale team goes back on the road visiting country clubs in the Southeast. They will be in Florida and Georgia through April and May.  http://www.cliffdrysdale.com/touring.camps.html

James Blake & Anna Chakvetadze dish during Fila Friday Night!

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Last night at the Sony Ericsson Open,  the legendary Cliff Drysdale hosted Fila Friday Night which has become a tradition at the tournament.  For the past 5 years, Fila Friday has been the time for Fila’s athletes to field questions from their fans.  This year, James Blake & Anna Chakvetadze dished on tennis, Miami, dating and favorite things besides tennis!

Cliff decided to mix things up a bit & his first question was to ask James to start the interview!  With the “shoe on the other foot” James asked Anna what she liked to do in Miami…she promptly responded that she liked going to clubs! Who knew she was a dancing queen!

When asked where they would live, Anna loves Russia, but NOT the weather. Miami is more her style!  James is a Fairfield, CT guy at heart would only live in his hometown!

One of the fans asked about James relationship status - sorry gals, he’s “taken”! There was a loud sigh across the audience. Anna quipped that now all the girls in the audience would leave!

Favorite sport outside of tennis,  Anna is a HUGE soccer fan and  James, the NY Giants, of course!

When asked about training schedules, Anna shared that she does not train too much between matches. The pool and the sun are her pre-match regimen. James also makes sure to get plenty of rest between matches. Oh, to have that tennis talent!

Learn from the Pros!

The Fila Touring team from Cliff Drysdale Tennis is taking over the Fila Family Zone at the Sony Ericsson Open! Teaching professionals from the Team are leading free tennis clinics every day during the tournament.

Yesterday, the Fila Family Zone was full of activity with 1500 kids from all over Miami-Dade County. Fila Touring Team pros Scott McCulloch, Ty Myers, Sam Keenan & Louanne Fischer led clinics that allowed the kids to “really experience” the tennis action that they watched on court. 80% of the kids had never played tennis and we think Scott McColluch got hit about 150 times by flying tennis balls! Between ducking from balls, laughing with the kids and showing the finer points of a forehand, the Fila Touring team shared that so many of the kids thought this was an experience of a lifetime.

According to Scott McCollugh, they felt as though they were part of tennis action, part of tournament, and it was very special for every one of them! When they were on the court swinging a forehand, the kids imagined they were one of the pros…a future James Blake or Svetlana Kuznetsova. So many of the kids now have aspirations of pro tennis. They would have stayed out on court all day…but the buses had to take them back to school. The tennis dream is now alive!

The Fila Touring Team is giving free tennis clinics daily at the Sony Ericsson Open. Check out all the things to do on-site!

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Residents of the Palm Springs area were treated to a tennis clinic courtesy of Fila with tennis legend Roy Emerson on March 9 - 10.

Tennis players and enthusiasts enjoyed an hour long clinic at Golfsmith in Palm Desert, California.

Emerson and Cliff Drysdale Tennis teaching professional Anup Kapur (of Brickell Tennis Club) showcased a dynamic synergy of learning, match play, team competition an camaraderie. Their Aussie-style clinics are for tennis enthusiasts of all levels and are conducted in a fun and spirited setting, creating the Ultimate Tennis Expereince.

In the juniors clinic at 6pm on Tuesday, Emmo (as Roy Emerson is affectionately known), showed tennis newcomers how to hit forehands, backhands and had the kids play interactive drills to improve their tennis skills.

In the Advanced Clinic, Emmo bantered back and forth with the participants during the King & Queen of the court contest where the level of play was very competitive.

All participants were able to demo the latest Wilson racquets. After each clinic, Emmo selected winners of tickets to the BNP Paribas Open.
