Anthony Colby of the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light Solos to First NRC Victory in Final Stage of BMC Cascade Cycling Classic

Colavita/Sutter Home’s Tina Pic is Best Sprinter in Women’s Race

Anthony Colby of the top-ranked Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light captured his first NRC win with a solo victory in the finale of the BMC Cascade Cycling Classic on July 26 in Bend, OR.

After a long week of mountainous racing, the 83-mile Awbrey Butte Circuit Race was daunting as the mid-day heat beat down on the peloton.  Anthony and his  Colavita/Sutter Home teammates Luis Amaran, Alejandro and Anibal Borrajo, Davide Frattini, and Sebastian Haedo lined up for the challenging 17-mile circuit of the final stage, buoyed by Alejandro’s second place finish in the previous day’s criterium. On the third lap, Anthony jumped into the winning move of the day with eight other riders and gained more than three minutes on the field.  Known for his climbing prowess, Anthony timed his attack perfectly over the final decisive climb, harnessing enough strength to hold off the chase group to claim victory.

In the women’s events, the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light captured four podium placements plus the green jersey for best sprinter overall for five-time US National Champion Tina Pic.  Tina also finished second in Stage 1 and Stage 5.  Cath Cheatley, #4 in the women’s individual NRC standings, took second in Stage 2, 3rd in Stage 6, and 4th overall.

The Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Team now heads into the USA Cycling National Road Championship events.  Tina Pic, Andrea Dvorak, Carmen McNellis, Stacy Marple, Kelly Benjamin as well as incoming Superweek overall winner Nicky Wangsgard and Points jersey winner Shontell Gauthier will contest the road race on July 30th. Carmen McNellis, Stacy Marple and Andrea Dvorak will race the Individual Time Trial on July 31.

Victory and Podium Finish for Colavita/Sutter Home Cycling Teams presented by Cooking Light at Iron Hill Twilight Criterium

Luca Damiani Wins Men’s Race; Cath Cheatley Takes Second in Women’s

The Colavita/Sutter Home Cycling Teams presented by Cooking Light used the break in the NRC calendar to notch another win and podium placement.  Luca Damiani of the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team capitalized on the strong lead-out provided by teammates Alejandro Borrajo, Anibal Borrajo, Luca Damiani, Guido Palma, Andy Guptill, Dan Vaillancourt and Leandro Bottaso to win the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium in West Chester, PA on July 11th.  Luca broke away from the bunch with seven other riders with 11 laps to go, working hard to lap the field before the final laps of the race.  Alejandro took Luca through the last corner in perfect position to cross the finish line first.

In the women’s race, Cath Cheatley of the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light jumped ahead of the field with six other riders to lap the field within the first half of the evening’s race. Cath, who currently ranks 4th in the NRC Women’s Individual Standings, and Laura van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom Racing) broke away from the field again in the final laps of the race. Cath tried to maneuver through the last laps to gain a gap on her breakaway companion but in the end the race came down to a two-woman sprint, with Cath crossing the line just behind Van Gilder.

Colavita/Sutter Home Cycling Team in Manhattan Beach!

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Colavita/Sutter Home’s Sebastian Haedo finished second in Sunday’s Manhattan Beach Grand Prix but that was all he needed to move up to #1 in the NRC (National Racing Calendar) men’s individual standings. Racing only with his Argentine compatriot Alejandro Borrajo, the pair secured positions behind the Rock Racing lead-out train in the final laps of the men’s 80-minute criterium. An untimely accident caused Alejandro to chase his way back into the peloton with two laps to go. Separated from his teammate, Sebastian made his own way to the back of US National Criterium Champion Rahsaan Bahati (Rock Racing). The pair rounded the final U-turn that marked 200-meters to go in a full speed sprint to the line. Sebastian was a close second while Alejandro was forced to settle for 10th.

After many hard-fought podium finishes, the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light retains the top ranking in the NRC team standings. “Our sponsors have been backing us for seven years and I’m pleased that our hard work is paying off in more and more successes,” said Directeur Sportif Sebastian Alexandre, who began his US racing career with Colavita/Sutter Home when the team made its debut on the pro circuit in 2002. “I’m very pleased to see our squad doing so well – both individually and in the overall. It’s the first time that Colavita/Sutter Home leads the NRC as a team and with an individual rider.”

Colavita/Sutter Home will aim for its second sweep of the season at the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic as Kyle Wamsley and Cath Cheatley return to defend their titles. Kyle will be joined at the line by Luis Amaran, Alejandro Borrajo, Anthony Colby, Andy Guptill, Sebastian Haedo, Dan Vaillancourt, and Tyler Wren. Kelly Benjamin, Andrea Dvorak, Rachel Heal, Heather Logan, Stacy Marple, Carmen McNellis, and Tina Pic will represent the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Team with Cath. The Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Team currently leads in the team rankings of the Women’s Prestige Cycling Series.

Colavita/Sutter Home Cycling Team Top Podium

Alejandro Borrajo and Sebastian Haedo of the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light Top Podium for  Second Straight Day

Tina Pic Takes Second and Tiffany Cromwell Leads in Best Climber  Competition

It was deja-vu for the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light:  textbook tactics, solid teamwork, and two riders on the podium at stage three of the Nature Valley Grand Prix.  As the professional peloton entered the five finishing circuits of the 62-mile Cannon Falls Road Race, the Colavita/Sutter Home squad prepared to go for all or nothing.  The team’s indomitable lead-out train rounded the final lap with Sebastian Haedo and Alejandro Borrajo in perfect position to win the bunch sprint.  Sebastian and Alejandro switched roles from yesterday’s criterium, with Sebastian starting his jump with 400 meters to go to lead Alejandro to the base of the 200-meter finish hill.  Alejandro crossed the line first, with Sebastian, his friend from childhood, just behind in second.

“It was the plan for me to win today to get some time bonuses because the last stages are very hard and I can do well on those climbs,” said Alejandro, referring to the decisive climbs ahead in stages five and six. “I think we are good at finding each other and able to come together for the lead-out very well. I will keep going for the time bonuses too. We can win this stage race.”

In the women’s race, Tiffany Cromwell of the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Cycling Team dominated the three available QOM sprints, finishing third and second in the first two and winning the final. With the QOM points out of the way, the race was on for the stage win.  Defending stage winner Tina Pic and her Colavita/Sutter Home teammates gathered toward the front of the peloton five miles before the dirt road entrance onto the finishing circuits.  However, a massive crash took Tina and teammates Rachel Heal and Kelly Benjamin down, forcing them to chase individually back up to the main field.  Tina made it back but then missed the unmarked turn onto the dirt road section.  Demonstrating what champions are made of, Tina turned around, chased her way to the front group, and managed, with help from teammates Cath Cheatley, Andrea Dvorak, and Tiffany to sprint into second place.   Tiffany enters stage four wearing the Best Climber’s jersey.

The Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light put two riders in the top 10 of the Philadelphia International Classic on Sunday. Alejandro Borrajo finished 7th and teammate Sebastian Haedo followed in 9th.  At 156 miles, the Philadelphia International Classic is the longest one-day race in the US (Andrei Greipel of Team Columbia was the first to cross the finish line, with a time of just under 6.5 hours).
Cath Cheatley of the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light finished fifth in the women’s 57.6-mile Liberty Classic.  Cath was among a handful of riders able to maintain the rapid pace set by race leader Team Columbia-Highroad in the  climb up the infamous Manayunk “Wall”.  The photo of Cath below is just one of the racing images from Philly taken by Jonathan Devich.
