Szavay Wins Two WTA Titles in Two Weeks!

Agnes Szavay is on a roll! The 23 year-old from Hungary reached back-to-back finals on the WTA Tour and won both! Last week in Budapest, in front of a home crowd, Agi defeated Patty Schnyder 6-2, 6-4 and successfully defended her GDF Suez Grand Prix title. This was her fouth WTA title and her third on clay.

According to Agi,   "It was a tough match, especially because of the weather - it was really hot. We also both had long matches yesterday, so we were both pretty tired. But we tried to do our best," Szavay said. "I think mentally it was better for me today. We played in the final last year and I won in a tight match, and I think she was thinking about it. She seemed a little nervous at the beginning."
"It's unbelievable to win in Hungary again," Szavay added. "The crowd was great, just like last year. To win two times at home, I can't describe this feeling."

Today in Prague, Agi won her fifth careet WTA title by defeating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the Prague Open final.
Szavay took the first set and Sahlavova took six straight games in the second set.
Agi fought back in the final set to win the match in one hour 56 minutes.

Congrats Agi!

Be a Part of Tennis History in Newport

July 10th, 2010

The International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, established in 1954, is a milestone in the tennis and sporting world. This landmark in Newport, Rhode Island consists of 18 galleries with a chronicled history of tennis dating back to the 12th Century. Over 16,000 permanent objects fill the Museum along with an abundant array of books, photos, films and tapes, magazines, periodicals, and personal player memorabilia. Any sports fan would be impressed with this vast tennis collection located in the home of the historic Newport Casino.

1881 marked the year of the first U.S. National Tennis Championships, hosted on the grass courts of the future International Tennis Hall of Fame. Now recognized as the US Open, this tournament moved to its current home in New York but Newport’s tennis tradition continues every summer through the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

Noted for being the only professional tennis tournament played on grass in the United States, the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships is a prestigious event and the first event of the US swing of the summer tennis season.

At first, American players were the only inductees into the Hall of Fame but in 1975 any tennis player from around the world was given the opportunity to be honored as tennis’ finest.

This weekend the Class of 2010 Induction, will feature individuals who were doubles stars and innovators of the game.  Mark Woodforde, Gigi Fernandez, Natasha Zvereva, and Owen Davidson will be given the one of the greatest honors in tennis.

Fila is proud to be a sponsor of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships!

Record Breaking Heat Can’t Slow Down Tennis in Newport

July 8th, 2010

The Quarterfinals begin today at the Campbell’s Tennis Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island. Not only has there been three days of record breaking heat, the players are lighting up the courts with only a few days left of the tournament.   After back surgery and an eight month absence from tennis, Canadian Frank Dancewic defeated Wimbledon “marathon man” Nicoals Mahut for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Fila provided the proper gear for players, officials, and ball kids to keep cool during the heat wave that hit the East Coast. Fila’s breathable lightweight performance tennis apparel not only kept everyone from being drenched in sweat, but also gave everyone extra sun protection from the sun since all of Fila’s tennis apparel has SPF 30 incorporated into all tennis performance fabric.

Aside from the actual tournament, lots of activities are onsite for spectators to enjoy. Autograph signings at the Fila booth; a fashion show featuring the latest resort styles from Newport retailer Angela Moore which also featured Fila’s men’s and women’s fitness looks and Campbell’s Soup product tastings are just a few activities fans can check out while enjoying the action on court.  Fans are also avoiding the heat by popping into the Museum to enjoy the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s latest exhibits.  Exhibits include a chronicle of the history of tennis from its 12th century origins to present day, Kim Clijsters’ 2009 US Open outfit and tribute exhibits about the Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2010.

She came out of the box really fast and started by really dominating. I kind of felt a little bit overwhelmed by it. It was up to me to stay in the points, and I started serving better and staying in the rallies. That's how I made it turn around, getting into a few longer rallies."
