One of the hottest new stars on the ATP tour, Marin Cilic made his presence known in 2007 by steadily climbing the ATP Tour rankings with Semi-final finishes in St. Petersburg and Quarter-final finishes in Beijing and London (Queens Club). 2008 is off to a strong start with semi-final finishes in singles and doubles in Chennai. A former world number one junior, Marin broke into the ATP rankings in 2006, but made 2007 his breakthrough season on the pro tour.
After Starting 2007 at number 170, and qualifying for six ATP Tour events,
Marin finished the year ranked 71, becoming the second youngest player in the top 100. His victories over Gonzales, Melzer and Almagro at the 2008 Australian Open helped him to break into the top 50, attaining a career high ranking of number 39.
Marin has loved playing tennis since he first picked up a racquet at the age of seven. He considers his game suited to all surfaces and his backhand as his biggest strength. He is coached by Bob Brett, the world famous coach of Boris Becker, and Goran Ivanisivec. In his free time, Marin plays soccer and follows his favorite teams AC Milan and Croatia.
