Russian born and Sacramento, California raised Dmitry Tursunov qualified for his first ATP tournament in 2001. Despite working through several injuries, he made his way into the top 100 for the first time in 2003 and reached the Third Round of the US Open in his Grand Slam debut. In early 2006, he debuted in the top 50 where he has remained ever since. The aggressive baseliner has excellent ground strokes and prefers to play on faster surfaces. Dmitry helped lead the Russian Davis Cup team to their title win in 2006, and the finals in 2007.
In 2004, Dmitry played all four Grand Slams and reached a personal- best third round at Wimbledon. After reaching quarter finals in Memphis and Houston, Dmitry advanced to his career first semi-final in Washington.
Dmitry continued to climb the rankings helped when he reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and the semi-final in his hometown of Moscow. In 2006, he finished in the Top 25 with first ATP Title in Mumbai and won a personal best 45 matches and helped the Russian Davis Cup team reach the final against Argentina.
Tursunov is known on tour for his great power game, quick wit, and hilarious off-court antics which makes him one of the best personalities in the sport today. He is also known for his popular blogs on atptennis.com. Dmitry was introduced to tennis by his Father, Igor, and his family moved from Moscow to the U.S. when he was 12 ½ years old. He is coached by Vitaly Gorin and is based out of Gorin Tennis Academy in the Sacramento area.
